All pictures were taken with a Solida f2.9, 6x6cm camera,
film size 120. A folding, bellows camera with uncoupled
range-finder. Max shutter speed: 1/500sec. Exposures set by
estimation or by external "Sixtomat" exposure meter. I was
beguiled by a low price of $30, the relatively fast lens and
shutter speed.
11-01-31: Slides when re-photographed were in almost random
order and needed to be integrated into a coherent single show.
The picture tags can't be viewed properly within the cam card
PTFs. Have brought them into this file and will confine future
edits to it.
Rescans could perhaps be made at higher res by lifting the light table so that
the picture at 4.0x telephoto fills the screen. Using higher magnification
triggers software enlargement, which doesn't really render any more detail.
Be careful of distance. Under 20cm(?) needs macro setting. Check for sharpness.
Some uncertain locations could perhaps be determined or rechecked using the
web to locate comparable scenic and tourist images. eg Limburg, Rothenburg.
Also check spellings.

An impressive moment when the march leader bellowed out the
order. They had more military swagger that day than any of the
other national groups: German, French or American. An odd thing
for airmen, you might think. But some of them had been given
modest combat training for defending the air base against small
scale land attack.
An Air Force band followed. I recall an Airwoman playing a violin.

Was this Freiburg on the Winegrowers trip, or on a family trip?
If on the Winegrowers trip, it was on the homeward leg. I
remember being stopped on a bridge in town by a very
good-looking young woman, business-suited in well-cut pinkish
tweeds. She tried to sell me a subscription to SudWest RundFunk
Magazine, the publication of an FM, high-fidelity music and
Kultur station. She seemed not to notice that I wasn't a native
speaker. I credit my growing ability in those days to be a good
listener auf Deutsch, replying in polite monosyllables and
smiling a lot.

The purpose of this Englend trip was to deliver me (Derek) to London to write

the RCAF to fly with me to Langar, the Canadian supply base in England. From
there we took buses to London where I was installed in a rooming house near
Russell Square near the University of London. Dad then headed home to
Zweibrucken. When not attending exams, I wandered around London taking
pictures. To go home I headed back to Langar where Dad shepherded me back to
Zweibucken via RCAF transport (very basic.)

54-to-58 - B.A. Abbas, fellow student..
Actually have a reference to him in my letters from 58.03.10. Was trying to
get his address from the British Council. This also fixes the date of my
own trip to 1956.

54-to-58 - From the plane, return trip.
Probably a Bristol Freighter on the return journey, judging from the fairing
hanging down on the right. Seems to me that the Dakota we took on the trip to
England would have had retractable landing gear and a more streamlined engine
nacelle. Both were strictly cargo planes with fold-up canvas seats along the
fuselage. Very noisy. Couldn't hear quiet sounds for days after the flight.

This was the point where Dad pleaded exhaustion and headed back down. I
scouted out the museum at this level, then continued upward. I know there
were more pictures taken at a very top of the tower. Grossly underexposed,
but possibly recoverable using digital methods. But can't find them.

Sponsored by Parkbrau, Zweibrucken's own brewery. So, with suitable
fortification, and the camera on a strap round my neck, with a cable release
leading into my pocket, I only need to turn toward people and discreetly
click the shutter.
6610-304
