Day 0: Arrival Kingston, Old haunts.
D445-003
17-07-31 - First views: Kawartha voyageur.
websrch:www.ontariowaterwaycruises.com
My own spying is
entirely in the service of personal photo-journalism. Nothing
to do with colonial imperialism.
D445-061
17-07-31 - Remember, kids?
When we used to lift you up onto the lion's back?
Richardson Beach Park, Kingston, downtown. Just south of
Macdonald Memorial Park.
D445-068
17-07-31 - The Steam Museum.
D078-09
03-12-28 - 2003: Dea ex Machina, Steam Museum.
This picture figured in my first photo show at the Roselawn in
Port Colborne. It was hung alongside another Kingston pic: The
Mills of the gods (... grind slow, but they grind exceeding small.
qv) I love the inexorable, rotary, mill-like quality of these
and similar pics. They sometimes also have a Piranesi-like
aura. (also qv)
D445-071
17-07-31 - Day is done. Gone the sun.
D445-077
17-07-31 - Boarding time at last.
Do I see a crowd of white-haired people down there on the left,
lining up at the gangplank?

Day 1: Thousand Islands side trip.
D446-001
17-08-07 - We wake up to fog, Kingston hbr.
Briefly socked-in.
D446-002
17-08-01 - Composition.
Oh good, a subject I can see, at close range.
D446-004
17-08-01 - Top deck, after breakfast.
D446-013
17-08-01 - Departing Kingston hbr.
That's City Hall dome in the middle, between the two fake
smokestacks of the pretend paddle steamer.
D446-015
17-08-01 - Martello tower defences are holding.
Kingston has nothing to fear from naval attack by Gananoque.
And Sacketts Harbor, opposite Kingston on the US side of Lake
Ontario, hasn't fired a shot in anger for years.(qv)
D446-029
17-08-01 - Fort Henry, brooding.
Their big guns could certainly reach this far.
D446-040
17-08-01 - Merle the far-seeing ...
charts a course. Perhaps thinking of Ottawa in a few days, or
Malta next month?
D446-047
17-08-01 - The ship's bow.
D446-048
17-08-01 - The ship's bridge.
D446-050
17-08-01 - The ship's neighbours.
D446-055
17-08-01 - The ship's skipper, left.
He doesn't have two heads, although that might come in handy
for keeping a lookout both fore and aft at the same time. Crazy
power-boaters zipping all over the place.
D446-056
17-08-01 - Other top deck material.
D446-077
17-08-01 - Gananoque waterfront.
And all that healthy, outdoor, holistic tourist stuff.
D446-078
17-08-01 - Gan. dock. Museum visit.
D446-109
17-08-01 - Off again. 1000 Islands next.

D446-154
17-08-01 - World's shortest international bridge?
D446-164
17-08-01 - Fast water, heading back to Kingston.

D447-058
17-08-02 - Lock spritz.

D447-063
17-08-02 - Much rail traffic, terrific noise.
D447-066
17-08-02 - Toronto to Montreal main rail line.
D447-077
17-08-02 - Parks Canada glasses girl.
Waiting to work the lock mechanism. Most are still completely manual.
D447-081
17-08-02 - The Mate checks clearance at the side.
D447-087
17-08-02 -
D447-091

D447-093
17-08-02 - Outhouse of paradise.
Colonel By Lake?
D447-099
17-08-02 - Ship's bridge drops for low road bridge.
The Mate, in blue up front, stands up through a hatch to keep an eye on
clearance. He ducks down at the last minute. To avoid
decapitation.
D447-100
17-08-02 - We too have to get out from under.
And sit down low in our seats. A crew member stand guard in the
stairwell to make sure no senior gets imulsive and stands up to head to the
washroom at the last minute.
D447-101
17-08-02 - Tight fit.
D447-110
17-08-02 - The doors of repentance swing wide.
I hear an echo from somewhere. The back room of St. George's
church? Only, back then, the doors of repentance were more likely to
swing shut if our prayers weren't fervent enough.
D447-111
17-08-02 - Lock walk.
D447-002
17-08-02 - At Jones Falls locks.
A small Parks Canada military exhibit. Mao, Chou, Big Julie, Napoleon. Meh!
Who cares, we've got decades of military and industrial history to
contemplete, right here in Canada.
D447-137
17-08-02 - The KV enters the lock.
D447-141
17-08-02 -
D447-142
17-08-02 - Has a bulldog look from this angle.
D447-143
17-08-02 - A female deckhand ties up.
Seems that the women on this boat do all the heavy lifting.
Actually, somebody explained that the crew quarters don't have
separate male and female facilities. So it's simpler (and
nicer?) to go all female.
D447-148
17-08-02 - Spiral nebulae.
DR succumbs briefly to abstraction. Artists go for this wacky stuff.
Supposed to be part of the very essence of ... whatever. Me: It's not that
I love abstraction or introspection less, but that I love the
external world more. You really don't wanna get lost inside my head.
D447-155
17-08-02 - KV crew bring coffee for the dockworkers.
D447-160
17-08-02 - Let's get a pic.
Of this cute aquatic critter, she says. Thanks. Don't mind if I
do, cute aquatic critter y'self.
D447-165
17-08-02 - Newboro dock, aquatic weed whacker.
D447-168
17-08-02 - Tied up for the night.
Canoes belonging to a US Boy Scout troop.

D448-010
17-08-03 - KV under way.
D448-013
17-08-03 - Westport ahead.

17-08-03 - Tight channel.
D448-024
17-08-03 - Docking with 180 turn.

03-12-27 - 2003: Westport winter holiday.
D077-09
03-12-28 - 2003: We stayed here.
D448-028
17-08-03 - Classic front, tin shingles on the walls.
D448-029
17-08-03 - Too bulky for a souvenir.
to stow in our cabin. But the colours are cheery.
D448-035
17-08-03 - Westport museum.
This large wooden carving of Lady Justice was once atop city hall, Brockville.
D448-050
17-08-03 - A classic camera.
How I used to covet one of those. Speed Graphic, or some such
brand. It had all the lens and focus adjustments that my Brownie
Hawkeye lacked. But the plate and cut sheet film was expensive,
hard-to-find in the boondocks, and, to youthful me, prohibitively
expensive.
D448-052
17-08-03 - From the mezzanine.
D448-054
17-08-03 - Dolly bed.
In Danville, during the war, I had fruit baskets to bed down my teddy-bears.
D448-055
17-08-03 - Contrasts.
D448-056
17-08-03 - Ladies who had these pinched kid cheeks.
Merle and I both remember getting our cheeks pinched in a
similar context by elderly ladies with fur lapels consisting of
little beady-eyed animals glaring down at us.
D448-063
17-08-03 - Just in time to reboard, 11am.
D448-064
17-08-03 - Me swotting up for beachcomber finals.
Back on board.
D448-083
17-08-03 - Opening the lock gate.
Keep that lovely hair out of the gears, Brunhilda.
D448-097
17-08-03 - Downtown Smith's Falls.
D448-115
17-08-03 - Dont fall overboard camera lady.
D448-120
17-08-03 - Parks Canada crew on duty, gate repairs.
They had just completed a major repair on one of the lock gates
when we arrived. Edmund's Lockstation.
D448-130
17-08-03 - Evening entertainment.

17-08-04 -
D449-004
17-08-04 - Merrickville blockhouse museum.
D449-010
17-08-04 - Like ours in Sackville.
D449-014
17-08-04 - Miss Havisham's wedding dress.
D449-018
17-08-04 - Il Duce Inglesi.
Y'know, I'm beginning to love these country museums. They have
a haymish, domestic feel you don't find at the ROM.
D449-024
17-08-04 - The Baldachin Inn.
D449-027
17-08-04 - Alley. Xref China.
D273-281
12-07-14 - 2012: Alley, China.
D449-048
17-08-04 - Betty Boop.
D449-060
17-08-04 - Debarqe for walkies.
D449-065
17-08-04 - Love these weedy, oozy things.
What English artist said something like that about locks? Constable?

D449 17-08-04 Day 4: Merrickville, Long Island
Day 5: Ottawa, drive Napanee and home.
D450-008
17-08-05 - AM. Doing the bridge windows.
D450-014
17-08-05 - Both port and starboard sides.
I think she does the opposite side, not by hanging over the water, but by
waiting till another day when they'll probably be docked the other way round.
D450-021
17-08-05 - He turns the bridge with a hand crank.
There's a gearing system underneath, well balanced and
lubricated.
D450-044
17-08-05 - Our last stroll off the boat.
Note: the Kawartha Voyageur is now travelling downhill as the
locks descend toward the Ottawa River from the connected series
of interior lakes and rivers.
D450-048
17-08-05 - Call the MOE.
D450-060
17-08-05 - Parks Canada work boat.
D450-068
17-08-05 - They'll wait for us further on.
D450-071
17-08-05 - KV Dining room decor.
Just passing through. (Looking for afternoon tea and cookies.)
D450-090
17-08-05 - Ottawa suburbs.
Miles of affluent-looking waterfront properties. I won't
comment on the pay-scale of Ottawa civil servants; some of
our more right-wing friends have already done so.
D450-095
17-08-05 - The Rideau Canoe Club.
D450-111
17-08-05 - Hog's Back chute, south of Ottawa.
D450-112
17-08-05 - Kid-friendly rocks to clamber on.
D450-136
17-08-05 - Final photo-op.
The boat couldn't go any farther north at this point. Downtown Ottawa has no
place on the canal with a turning basin large enough for the Kawartha
Voyageur to reverse direction. On one trip, earlier in the year, the boat
does continue on toward the Ottawa River, north of the Parliament Buildings.
But traversing this final series of locks takes an extra day, which is not
available in our current cruise.
At this tie-up, the boat will be re-provisioned, tidied up, and a new group
of passengers welcomed for the trip back south to Kingston.
So we pack up our gear and load ourselves onto a chartered
bus heading back to Kingston. There we find our car, parked very
close to the docks. A convenient loop arrangement.
D450-141
17-08-06 - Napanee by car. Last night on the road.
A walk round town after dinner. Nice riverside park, yacht
tie-up, lawns still a bit damp from this year's innundations.
D450-143
17-08-06 - Post office.
Needs a tweak with the HD options, DR. Done.
D450-152
17-08-06 - We're not quite sure about this place.
Needs a tweak of a different sort.
