walkway goes round the hi-rise building. A minimal concession to

while looking in shop windows. Whenever I pass a crowded
souvenir shop window (Italy, especially, qv) I remember Kim's
Game, part of some Boy Scout Badge I once needed to earn. Old
Baden-Powell thought that to be a good scout, on the frontiers
of Empire, you ought to remember details, recall locations,
without collecting incriminating notes. You never knew when you
might be interrogated by the local authorities. A scout,
after all, was a sort of secret agent, in short, a spy.
My own spying is
entirely in the service of personal photo-journalism. Nothing
to do with colonial imperialism.

The boat couldn't go any farther north at this point. Downtown Ottawa has no
place on the canal with a turning basin large enough for the Kawartha
Voyageur to reverse direction. On one trip, earlier in the year, the boat
does continue on toward the Ottawa River, north of the Parliament Buildings.
But traversing this final series of locks takes an extra day, which is not
available in our current cruise.
At this tie-up, the boat will be re-provisioned, tidied up, and a new group
of passengers welcomed for the trip back south to Kingston.
So we pack up our gear and load ourselves onto a chartered
bus heading back to Kingston. There we find our car, parked very
close to the docks. A convenient loop arrangement.
