Being of unspecific colour, a white house is distinguished from others more by form and inner being than by surface qualities. I am what I am, it says: a castle, a dwelling, a shed, perhaps only a container. Not grander, more refined, more modish than the next -- distinguished more by identity, function abd form than by attribute.

A white house embraces all adjacent colours. It claims none, while reflecting all. Refulgent, generous, triumphant, it has light to share. And the ability to absorb, mediate and harmonize neighbouring colours. A bulwark against the clamouring primaries, at the same time, a quiet refuge for the more fugitive shades. A constant reminder that worlds could be constructed out of monochrome. Even in decay, spotted and peeling, it gives the knowing shrug of threadbare nobility, a tolerant wink at all those jumped-up avocados, fin-de-siecle mauves and nouveau-riche silver-blues of this world.

Though a white house could be defined by the modulation of light and shadow alone, it consents to being quoined and shuttered with accoutrements of colour; to being crowned and helmeted by trusty tile, or weatherbeaten shingle. But it has no need for the adulation of ironic tints, no hunger for the flattery of sarcastic pigments. It does not insinuate. It is.
