2015 HF Holidays. Austria, Bavaria

D366-051
15-09-08 - Nice view from up here.

Mayrhofen, Austria, Day1,2. Ahornbahn

D357-001
15-08-28 - Bradley Ave. Waiting for Pearson bus.

D357-017
15-08-29 - Hotel Waldheim balcony view. What a contrast to Woodside Drive.

D357-033
15-08-29 - Mayrhofen mascot. Seen on our arrival day walkabout downtown.

D357-058
15-08-30 - Cablecar up, first ramble. Mayrhofen below. Our hotel is visible on that middle patch of green pasture. On the point, between the two lobes.

D357-119
15-08-30 - Drat. After lunch we had to go back down.
15-08-28 HF holiday, Mayrhofen, Day1,2. Ahornbahn

Mayrhofen Day3, Finkenberg Almbahn

D358-023
15-08-31 - Top of the Almbahn.

D358-032
15-08-31 - The rigours of camping. Actually Merle is more eager to hit the trail than to relax. I had to briefly hand-cuff her to this chair to get the picture.

D358-057
15-08-31 - Alpine welcoming committee. On our walks we were nearly always able to hear the jingle of cowbells.

D358-074
15-08-31 - Balcony views. Turn right for Mayrhofen Our route back to the hotel took us along a forest path on the side of the Ziller valley.
Speculation was that it might have been an old rail line, forest road, or a useful route in times of flood. We heard the term "balcony" applied to walking paths on the side of a slope paralleling the edge of a valley.
15-08-31 Mayrhofen - Day3, Finkenberg Almbahn

Mayrhofen Day4 Gerlosssteinwand

D359-004
15-09-01 - We only looked in at the gate. Too early for lunch.

D359-011
15-09-01 - We did stop here for lunch.

D359-033

D359-035
15-09-01 - Norma: Search-and-rescue friendly shirt.

D359-081
15-09-01 - Privileged position.

D359-088
15-09-01 - The view fom the balcony. Our hotel is down there in the middle, between the two green fields near the lower centre.

D359-131

15-09-02 - Heisse lieben Icecream. Merle doesn't seem impressed. Perhaps my lieben isn't heiss enough.

D360-019
15-09-02 - The rain in Austria falls mainly... on the tourists.

D360-021
15-09-02 - The little engine that could. And did. Pull trainloads of tourists up and down the valley.

D360-031
15-09-02 - She'll be comin' round the mountain.
15-09-02 Mayrhofen - Day5, Free day

Mayrhofen Day6, Schlegeis Dam, Ital border

D361-113
15-09-03 - The toilsome upward path

D361-163
15-09-03 - Die Grenze. We're now in Italy. S. Tirol. This was the scene of fierce battles between Italian and Austrian troops in WW1.

D361-019
15-09-03 - Very melodious moo. Entertained on the way back downhill to Austria.

D362-093
15-09-04 - Alm dude-ler. Here he is. His dude-lerina took the picture. That's her imprint on the chair beside him.

15-09-04 Mayrhofen - Day7, Schlegeis Dam, Downstream

Mayrhofen - Day8 = Tegernsee - Day1

D363-004
15-09-05 - Tearful departure, Mayrhofen, Austria

D363-021
15-09-05 - Tegernsee, Bavaria, Terrassenhof hotel

D363-022
15-09-05 - Our new room We may just ignore the hiking.

D363-026
15-09-05 - Our new west wing.

D363-027
15-09-05 - Our new balcony. We lived happily ever ... At least, until the flight home.
15-09-05 Mayrhofen - Day8 Tegernsee - Day1

Tegernsee Day2, Bauer in der Au. Bauer in der Au is the title, in the HF literature, of today's ramble. The name appears to mean Farmer in the dell. After considerable web searching, found that the term brings up an actual Tegernsee tourist guesthouse, the proprietor's zoning troubles with the municipality, and also information that the term au is Bavarian or Austrian dialect for meadow. Au is not listed in some major, on-line, German-to-English dictionaries.
Anyone recall the nursery rhyme?

The farmer in the dell, (2x)
Hi-ho the dairy-oh,

The farmer in the dell.

The farmer takes a wife, (2x)
Hi-ho ... (etc.)

The wife takes the cat, ... ... cat ... mouse ... cheese ... (each verse, someone is pointed out in succession.)

The cheese stands alone ...

I think this last is the "gotcha" line. The person selected is either "out" or voted into public office. We voted ourselves into carrying on with the ramble, despite misty, drizzly weather. Walking is quite feasible under these conditions, provided you have suitable raingear and stick to lower altitudes.

D364-024
15-09-06 - DR only LOOKS miserable. He's squinting at the camera screen while trying to frame the picture.

D364-026
15-09-06 - Our hotel is down there somewhere.

D364-036
15-09-06 - How come window boxes so floruit? Everywhere in Austria and Bavaria, lush window boxes. What's the secret, mountain air, fertilizer, automated litigation?

D364-046
15-09-06 - Walk back along the Tegernsee shore.

D364-050
15-09-06 - Archimedian screw. A lady used it to give her dog a drink. Although the pooch could simply have strolled down to the water's edge.
This illustrates a point about being human that animals will never understand.

D364-056
15-09-06 - Sculpture park on the strand.

D364-057
15-09-06 - Is she grooving or just indifferent?
15-09-06 Tegernsee - Day2, Bauer in der Au

Tegernsee Day3, Balcony Route

D365-001
15-09-06 - Derek's precious. We did not practice safe sex while at Tegernsee.

D365-011
15-09-07 - Here's our transport across the lake.

D365-018
15-09-07 - I'm the ruler of the Queen's navee. With a pop-gun to intimidate pirates of Penzance.

D365-026
15-09-07 - Though there are several churches ... on its shores, this is not the Holy See.

D365-046
15-09-07 - Rathaus at the end of the universe. Lake Tegernsee comes close to being a mini tourist universe.

D365-100
15-09-07 - The schloss-monastery-brauerei.

D365-147
15-09-07 - Am Ludwig Erhard-Platz, Gmund. Wikipedia: He is often famed for leading German postwar economic reforms and economic recovery ("Wirtschaftswunder," German for "economic miracle") in his role as Minister of Economics under Chancellor Konrad Adenauer.
15-09-06 Tegernsee - Day3, Balcony Route

Tegernsee Day4, Wallberg

D366-009
15-09-08 - I'll get the next car, Merle. But you'd better keep an eye on the dude with the sunglasses.

D366-019
15-09-08 - Up.

D366-034
15-09-08 - Hang-glider chapel. That may be Germany's Zugspitze behind the light standard, almost hidden in cloud. Check out DR's 1950's show including Zugspitze cog railway pictures.
Zweibruecken. Germany, 1950's

D366-051
15-09-08 - Merle is content with the view. Of Tegernsee.

D366-055
15-09-08 - Flight preparations. She's waiting (right) till the wind picks up.

D366-064
15-09-08 - Liftoff. The wind is blowing uphill. They take a running leap, then tuck up legs to avoid the tree-tops.
A second, blue para-sail is ahead, just above the yellow one. Someone said they saw one of the gliders land on a green area below.

D366-089
15-09-08 - Lunch: a bit over the top. Who was the guilty party?

D366-095
15-09-08 - Bauern omlette for DR. A real man-of-the-people, authentic, salt-of-the-earth, farmery kind of dude. Oh yes, and a radler to wash it down.
The name "radler" means "cyclist" and was first applied to a drink by a Bavarian innkeeper whose establishment was overwhelmed one day by cyclists. Having limited beer, and an overstock of lemon soda in the basement, he mixed beer and soda 50-50, with the claim that they wouldn't fall off their bikes on the rest of the ride. The new drink immediately caught on. Unfortunately, ready-mix radler can be hard-to-find in North America. And waiters, typically, don't know what you mean by shandy. (That's my glass, discreetly placed off-camera at the right of the pic.)

D275-150
12-09-11 - The gods onside, or beer INSIDE? And remember, guys, One swallow does not a summer make. So drink up. (A tribute to The Biking Vikings at The Boathouse, Chippewa)

D366-125
15-09-08 - Not a hot pot. Or a crock-pot, or a crack-pot.
15-09-08 Tegernsee - Day4, Wallberg

Tegernsee Day5, Free day

D367-012
15-09-09 - Shorewalk: Brit embassy? Wrong crest.

D367-013
15-09-09 - Nice kitty. Today, Merle, you don't have to take any thorns out of its paw.

0527-18
89 - 1989 M. as Androcles, Trafalgar Sq.

D367-035
15-09-09 - Schloss-brewery-monastery of day3.
15-09-09 Tegernsee - Day5, Free day

Tegernsee Day6, Spitzingsee

D368-014
15-09-10 - The group, ready for anything.

D368-019
15-09-10 - This is getting serious already. Some of the group went up to the very summit of this peak.

D368-040
15-09-10 - Are we having fun yet?

D368-077
15-09-10 - Our path, left and back, upwards. Rotwandhaus, ahead, our eventual destination.

D368-090
15-09-10 - Note: UNDER, not on. We make a polite (Canadian) statement für Judenkeit. The highest point on the trail.

D368-106
15-09-10 - Splendid views.

D368-110
15-09-10 - Path to lunch at Rotwandhaus.

15-09-10 Tegernsee - Day6, Spitzingsee

Tegernsee Day7, Kreuth, Koenigs Alm

D369-001
15-09-11 - Visit to a cheese factory, Pfoern Couldn't buy stuff to take home because of import regs. Picked up snacks instead.

D369-034
15-09-11 - Looks like Augustus in the woods. Emperor Maximilian somebody. BIG Max, we're told.

D369-044
15-09-11 - Lunch stop at the alm hut. Overlooks the Austrian border atop the ridge, south. Alm means alpine meadow.

D369-063
15-09-11 - Swim clockwise or anti-clockwise? Fish-hatchery behind the spa.

D369-071
15-09-11 - We perambulate Wildbad spa frontage. The spa is a historical site, appears to host conferences. Didn't hear if they still have mineral baths.
15-09-11 Tegernsee - Day7, Kreuth, Koenigs Alm

Tegernsee Day8, Departure for home

D370-001
15-09-12 - Last day, morning surprise. What time does the balloon go up? Early, it seems. A change in flight plans by Air Canada?

D370-015
15-09-12 - Our checked-out-of room, middle left.

D370-018
15-09-12 - Terrassenhof patio. A last look out onto the lake. A class of kids was learning the art of stand-up paddle boarding.

D370-024
15-09-12 - Munich airport bye-bye.

D370-030
15-09-12 - Greenland Glacier. Or, Gruenland Gletcher, as they might say in some circles. Took many pics out the plane window. Does that make me a Gletcher Letcher?

D370-031
15-09-12 - Us: Awe and wonder.

D370-056
15-09-12 - Greenland w. coast. Heading for Labrador. I've looked for that "H" formation of fiords on Google maps, but not found it.

D370-061
15-09-12 - DR, reality. Home. Be it ever so bumbled ...
