Arrived, yesterday evening Jan 2.
04-01-03 - Marina behind hotel, Hawaii Prince.

passageways, underground powder magazines and a spiral staircase to the

04-01-04 - Waikiki from Diamond Head summit.
04-01-04 - Portal in Diamond Head crater wall.
04-01-05 - At Germaine's Luau. Located in an unlikely industrial area, west side of Oahu. The drinks were generous and the atmosphere friendly.
2004-01-05 - Eco-tour.
04-01-05 - Surfer Dude econo-eco-tours. Rain forest hike with Surfer-dude. He runs an organization called The Wilderness Preservation Foundation Program. The morning-afternoon hike cost a voluntary contribution of $20, including transportation.
04-01-05 - Rainforest.
04-01-05 - Not as heavy as it looks.
04-01-05 - Banyan.
04-01-05 - Banyan roots in the path. A real challenge to walk on. At this point the guide also clued us in on the hazards of getting stuck out here at night with the woods full of man-eating wild boars. Apparently people have had to escape them by climbing trees.
04-01-05 - Nuuanu valley, Pali precipice ... located at the head of the valley, centre, where the ocean is visible.
A historical note:
"His (Kamehameha I's) canoes landed at Waikiki, and his warriors pursued Kalanikupule's army up the Nuuanu Valley. During the final battle at Pali precipice, hundreds of defending warriors were killed, many being driven over the precipice and dashed to pieces on the rocks below."
04-01-05 - Bamboo grove.
04-01-05 - Bamboo grove.
04-01-05 - Ah, the symbolism of flowers.
04-01-05 - A swim at Waikiki Beach.
04-01-05 - From a glass walled elevator, our hotel.
04-01-05 - Sunset from our hotel room window.
04-01-06 - Party time. Got carried away trying to use my wineglass for a camera lens at Sam Choy's Diamond Head Restaurant. Enjoyed a wine called Malvasia, evoking memories of Greece.
04-01-06 - Walking back along the strip , Waikiki. On Kuhio Avenue?
04-01-06 - Returning to our hotel. Revolving restaurant atop the Ambassador hotel. Tiki torches all up and down the street.
2004-01-06 - Big Island, Hawaii.
2004-01-07 - Hawaii Volcanoes Nat. Park.
04-01-07 - Landed at Kona Airport yesterday, drove to the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. Today to the Kilauea Caldera. Halema'uma'u Crater in the distance. We drive to the visitor centre on the far rim.
04-01-07 - Volcano walkers on the crater rim.
04-01-07 - Elephant hide?
04-01-07 - Offerings to Pele in a lava cave.
- Halema'uma'u Crater.
04-01-07 - Memorial service to a relative. Addressed to Pele, the volcano goddess. I recall thinking how "natural" it seemed. No thoughts: "This is pagan, and, therefore, alien." We've both come to accept this sort of spirituality as one of the normal options.
04-01-07 - Love and three oranges.
Next: Thurston Lava Tube.
04-01-07 - Tree fern.
04-01-07 - Entrance, Thurston lava tube.
04-01-07 - Inside the lava tube. Mom looks like she's on fire, but it's merely a trick of the light.
04-01-07 - Tree ferns 20 feet tall.
04-01-07 - Now THAT'S a fiddlehead.
- Fiddleheads, hairy ostrich eggs.
04-01-07 - Writhing, about to hatch.
04-01-07 - Volcano House Hotel. The hotel we DIDN'T stay at.
04-01-07 - Volcano House Hotel.(WC FX) Watercolourized. A good effect, but needs more detail in the face?
04-01-07 - Lava flow blocking the shore road. This is the end of Chain of Craters Road. It used to go all the way to Hilo till Pele intervened.
04-01-07 - Crispy lava.
04-01-07 - Ropey lava.
04-01-07 - Ripple-y lava.
04-01-07 - Crunchy lava.

04-01-07 - Oozy lava.

04-01-07 - Lava sandwich.

04-01-07 - Site of an abandoned fishing camp.
04-01-07 - Holei Sea Arch
2004-01-08 - Mauna Kea, Honokaa.
04-01-08 - Mauna Kea from our hotel balcony. The snowy summit is just to the left of the right-hand palm tree.
04-01-08 - Near Hilo. We climb a nearby cinder cone.
04-01-08 - Mauna Kea visitor centre. It's a 4-wheel drive on gravel from here upward. Our rental car was labouring, so we contented ourselves with ascending this cinder cone nearby.
04-01-08 - Rock garden on a nearby cinder cone.
04-01-08 - Picturesque village of Honokaa. The false fronts remind me of Fort McLeod, last year.
04-01-08 - The Pacific Ocean is visible out the back.
04-01-08 - Bank of Hawaii.
04-01-08 - The People's Theatre.
04-01-08 - The Waipio Valley.
04-01-08 - Honokaa village overlooks this inlet. The valley was once swept by a tidal wave that reached far inland. We didn't have time to walk right to the bottom, but it looks like a place for further exploration.
04-01-08 - Surf's up.
2004-01-09 - Maui.
04-01-09 - Flight to Maui, Kona airport. The dancers seem to say: "Hail to thee, blyth spirit. Bored thou never wert." (At least, not with tricky travel arrangements to worry about.)
04-01-09 - Lunch at the motorcycle cafe, Kehei, Maui. An old Harley-Davidson in the background. Eric Richards might have driven one of those.
04-01-09 - At the head of the Iao Valley, Maui.
2004-01-10 - Haleakala Crater.
04-01-10 - The summit visitor centre. Downhill bike tours and horse treks begin here. The horse van is the blue truck on the left. The bicyclists are dressed in blue and yellow windproof clothing.
04-01-10 - Summit of Haleakala crater, Maui.
04-01-10 - Haleakala crater.
04-01-10 - Haleakala summit shelter, 10,023ft. A stiff breeze and a significant chill factor.

- Haleakala summit.
04-01-10 - Silversword.
04-01-10 - Silversword.
04-01-10 - Inside Haleakala Crater. We start our walk downwards just before lunch. Fruit, yoghurt and water in the shelter of a lava boulder. Destination uncertain. We'll try to reach a vantage point on that red-tinged ridge in the right centre and then make up our minds whether to go further.
04-01-10 - Inside Haleakala crater.
04-01-10 - Deeper into the crater.
04-01-10 - This is the ridge we were aiming for.
04-01-10 - Lunch stop. Visitor centre on the rim behind Merle.
04-01-10 - Take your pick. Guava or guava.
04-06-06 - Backyard picnic, Ottawa St. I heard an echo, that day.
04-01-10 - We decide to aim for that colourful cinder cone on the middle left.
04-01-10 - We reach Ka Lu'u o ka O'o cinder cone. I estimate this point to be about 1500-2000ft. below the summit, 1 hour brisk walking. But 2 or more hours, and a very taxing climb back up again. Allow an extra 30 minutes to an hour for photo ops and lunch. And remember, you're at about 9,000ft altitude, your air supply is a bit thinner than usual.
- The central pit.
04-01-10 - We walk round the rim.
04-01-10 - Vulcanologists, Haleakala crater, Maui. Hey, don't laugh, this is serious business.
04-01-10 - A whiff of sulphur and brimstone? Consider the fate of Empedocles, the Greek philosopher who is said to have looked for immortality by jumping into the crater of Mt. Etna.
04-01-10 - A rest before we start back up.

04-01-10 - On the road down.
04-01-10 - Shadows lengthening.
04-01-11 - Waves on the beach, Kihei. This picture taken after a dinner at a Japanese restaurant where we hadn't a clue what to order. At least my Maitai cocktail DID provide a little spiritual nutrition.

04-01-11 - Morning coffee, hotel in Kihei.
04-01-11 - Japanese church, Lahaina.

End of Hawaii show.
