Located in an unlikely industrial area, west side of Oahu. The drinks were
generous and the atmosphere friendly.

Wilderness Preservation Foundation Program. The morning-afternoon hike cost a
voluntary contribution of $20, including transportation.

A real challenge to walk on. At this point the guide also clued us
in on the hazards of getting stuck out here at night with the

It's a 4-wheel drive on gravel from here upward. Our rental car was labouring,
so we contented ourselves with ascending this cinder cone nearby.

The valley was once swept by a tidal wave that reached far inland. We didn't
have time to walk right to the bottom, but it looks like a place for further
exploration.

We start our walk downwards just before lunch. Fruit, yoghurt and water in
the shelter of a lava boulder. Destination uncertain. We'll try to reach a
vantage point on that red-tinged ridge in the right centre and then make up
our minds whether to go further.

We decide to aim for that colourful cinder cone on the middle left.
04-01-10 - We reach Ka Lu'u o ka O'o cinder cone.
I estimate this point to be about 1500-2000ft. below the summit, 1 hour brisk
walking. But 2 or more hours, and a very taxing climb back up again. Allow an
extra 30 minutes to an hour for photo ops and lunch. And remember, you're at
about 9,000ft altitude, your air supply is a bit thinner than usual.
