D081-081
04-01-05 -
D081-089
04-01-05 - Banyan roots in the path.
A real challenge to walk on. At this point the guide also clued us
in on the hazards of getting stuck out here at night with the
woods full of man-eating wild boars. Apparently people have had
to escape them by climbing trees.
D081-103
04-01-05 - Nuuanu valley, Pali precipice ...
located at the head of the valley, centre, where the ocean is visible.
A historical note:
"His (Kamehameha I's) canoes landed at Waikiki, and his warriors pursued
Kalanikupule's army up the Nuuanu Valley. During the final battle at Pali
precipice, hundreds of defending warriors were killed, many being driven
over the precipice and dashed to pieces on the rocks below."
D081-105

D082-017
04-01-06 - Party time.

Greece.

- Halema'uma'u Crater.
D083-027
04-01-07 - Memorial service to a relative.
Addressed to Pele, the volcano goddess. I recall thinking how "natural" it
seemed. No thoughts: "This is pagan, and, therefore, alien." We've both come
to accept this sort of spirituality as one of the normal options.
D083-028
04-01-07 - Love and three oranges.
Next: Thurston Lava Tube.
D083-031

Mom looks like she's on fire, but it's merely a trick of the light.
D083-042
04-01-07 - Tree ferns 20 feet tall.
D083-041
04-01-07 - Now THAT'S a fiddlehead.

04-01-07 - Volcano House Hotel.
The hotel we DIDN'T stay at.
D083-04a
04-01-07 - Volcano House Hotel.(WC FX)
Watercolourized. A good effect, but needs more detail in the face?
D083-050
04-01-07 - Lava flow blocking the shore road.

till Pele intervened.

Located in the trees in the next picture. An invocation of the wrath of Pele
against anyone who disturbs the offering.

The snowy summit is just to the left of the right-hand palm tree.
D083-082
04-01-08 - Near Hilo.
We climb a nearby cinder cone.
D083-104
04-01-08 - Mauna Kea visitor centre.
It's a 4-wheel drive on gravel from here upward. Our rental car was labouring,
so we contented ourselves with ascending this cinder cone nearby.
D083-099
04-01-08 - Rock garden on a nearby cinder cone.
D083-110

D083-11B
04-01-08 - The Waipio Valley.
D083-120
04-01-08 - Honokaa village overlooks this inlet.
The valley was once swept by a tidal wave that reached far inland. We didn't
have time to walk right to the bottom, but it looks like a place for further
exploration.
D083-124
04-01-08 - Surf's up.
D083-126
04-01-08 -
2004-01-09 - Maui.
D083-128
04-01-09 - Flight to Maui, Kona airport.
The dancers seem to say: "Hail to thee, blyth spirit. Bored thou never
wert." (At least, not with tricky travel arrangements to worry about.)
D083-129
04-01-09 - Lunch at the motorcycle cafe, Kehei, Maui.
An old Harley-Davidson in the background. Eric Richards might have driven one
of those.

D083-143
04-01-09 -
2004-01-10 - Haleakala Crater.
D084-016
04-01-10 - The summit visitor centre.
Downhill bike tours and horse treks begin here. The horse van is the blue
truck on the left. The bicyclists are dressed in blue and yellow windproof
clothing.
D084-017
04-01-10 - Summit of Haleakala crater, Maui.
D084-01C
04-01-10 - Haleakala crater.
D084-020

D084-031
04-01-10 - Inside Haleakala Crater.
We start our walk downwards just before lunch. Fruit, yoghurt and water in
the shelter of a lava boulder. Destination uncertain. We'll try to reach a
vantage point on that red-tinged ridge in the right centre and then make up
our minds whether to go further.
D084-03A
04-01-10 - Inside Haleakala crater.
D084-04A
04-01-10 - Deeper into the crater.

I heard an echo, that day.
D084-057
04-01-10 -
We decide to aim for that colourful cinder cone on the middle left.
D084-065
04-01-10 - We reach Ka Lu'u o ka O'o cinder cone.
I estimate this point to be about 1500-2000ft. below the summit, 1 hour brisk
walking. But 2 or more hours, and a very taxing climb back up again. Allow an
extra 30 minutes to an hour for photo ops and lunch. And remember, you're at
about 9,000ft altitude, your air supply is a bit thinner than usual.
D084-07BA
- The central pit.
D084-082
04-01-10 - We walk round the rim.

looked for immortality by jumping into the crater of Mt. Etna.
