04-01-10 - Inside Haleakala Crater. We start our walk downwards just before lunch. Fruit, yoghurt and water. Destination uncertain. We'll try to reach a vantage point on that red-tinged ridge in the centre and then make up our minds whether to go further.

D090-008
04-06-06 - Backyard picnic, Ottawa St. I heard an echo, that day. We decide to aim for that colourful cinder cone on the middle left.

D084-065
04-01-10 - We finally reach Ka Lu'u o ka O'o cinder cone. I estimate this point to be about 1500-2000ft. below the summit, 1 hour brisk walking. But 2 or more hours, a very taxing climb back up again. Allow an extra 30 minutes to an hour for photo ops and lunch. And remember, you're at about 9,000ft altitude, your air supply is a bit thinner than usual.
